An active member of several associations and communities of practice, among which TESOL, WiA, Merlot, Hornby CL, Práxis, and T.A.L.O, she is presently BRAZ-TESOL EduTechSIG Coordinator and also serving on the 2008-9 NMC Horizon Project Advisory Board. As we strive to achieve positive perceptions of the important contributions we can all make to support professional development and promote our profession, it is fundamental to understand BRAZ-TESOL's role as facilitating effective communication, allowing the voices of all members to be heard and valued, encouraging active involvement in their local associations, organizations, chapters and SIGs and creating opportunities for new leaders to thrive. BRAZ-TESOL needs to establish not only brand name recognition for quality in ELT but also remain inclusive, financially sound, attract and retain new members, and help improve partnerships with multiple publics at national and international level to ensure a wide variety of learning, networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities relevant to the changing and diverse needs of EFL professionals in Brazil. In my role as EduTechSIG Coordinator running for First Vice Presidency, I see my mission as assisting and supporting the President in ensuring these aims are met.
Statement of Purpose I have been a member of BRAZ-TESOL since year one of its foundation and I strongly believe in the power of associations to give voice to issues that trouble, motivate, instigate or de-motivate its members and help them affirm their role in the professional sphere. BRAZ-TESOL has evolved over time but remains the truly national organization with the potential to bring together different segments of ELT in the country for the benefit not only of its members, but to offer a really significant contribution to the profession in Brazil. It is no secret to anyone who has been seriously committed to the ELT profession in Brazil that we lag behind other countries in Latin America in many respects as far as opportunities for continuous development offered to teachers. I have no doubt BRAZ-TESOL has an instrumental role in fostering initiatives in this direction and I would certainly work for this.
Statement of Purpose I am running for the second-vice president position because I believe I have what it takes: a love of BRAZ-TESOL and the required technical skills. I have worked on a few teacher association (TA) publications, including copy-editing of BRAZ-TESOL 2006 pre-convention programme, co-editing of the IATEFL TA Handbook and a special issue of the Research SIG newsletter on Action Research. My most recent MA study focused on the work of BRAZ-TESOL and two other TAs, and generated a few ideas to improve a TA. I have also been an active BRAZ-TESOL Pernambuco member, having edited several print materials. If elected, I would like to propose a few new features for the newsletter, to help increase the spread of our association across the country, and as much as possible offer a few more online options for members in states where there are no Regional Chapters or SIGs.
Statement of Purpose The reason I have decided to run for Second Vice President is that I believe I have the experience, qualifications, and enthusiasm to work with publications in general, besides the will to do volunteer work towards the advancement of our profession. My intention is to take the already renowned BRAZ-TESOL newsletter to a new level both in terms of quality of articles published – by means of attracting illustrious professionals in the field of ELT and related fields and BRAZ-TESOL members – and in terms of attracting more sponsors, not to mention new sections and features. I also intend to use the newsletter and other physical and virtual publications as means to advertise what happens in/with the association and, therefore, attract new members so we can work together and become even better professionals and, hopefully, more involved with BRAZ-TESOL.
Statement of Purpose I think one of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I have studies in the Business Administration field, and have always worked with Education – having been an English teacher, an academic coordinator, and director of a language school for executives. Throughout these years, I have acquired the necessary knowledge to plan and manage the financial sector of an institution. Cash flow control, budget analysis, and profitability were all part of my daily tasks. As BRAZ-TESOL treasurer, I plan to use this expertise to control the organization’s costs effectively, by keeping records of all its financial obligations and eventually increase its surplus by helping attract new members and by seeking new partnerships to guarantee that the association is financially healthy. I also intend to keep the membership regularly informed of BRAZ-TESOL’s financial status and progress.
Statement of Purpose I had put my name forward before for advisory council member, but would like to change my candidacy to treasurer as I believe I can contribute more this way. I am running because I identify myself with the objectives of BRAZ-TESOL. In a country where education is at last clearly understood as what can allow us to move forward and establish ourselves as a competitive, successful nation, there is a lot to do, and it will be a great experience to join a group whose purpose is to promote the advance of research and knowledge amongst English teachers. As an English teacher, I was fortunate to rely on the experience of wonderful people I could exchange ideas with, and it would be a great opportunity for me to give something back to Brazilian English teachers. I also have 12 years management experience running business units in different markets.
Statement of Purpose Teachers are above all learners, and professional development is essential in our area. One of the major roles of BRAZ-TESOL is to make it easier for all ELT professionals to have access to what's new and important in the field through events where world-renowned speakers share their expertise. I would like to contribute my time and experience in order to optimize this communication, be it within BRAZ-TESOL and its Chapters, be it between BRAZ-TESOL and its members.
Statement of Purpose The first thing you need to about me is that I work in the ELT field out of pure love for the English language. Becoming an English teacher was meant to be. It might sound naive to say that the reason I want to be more active inside BRAZ-TESOL is to “help people”, but I don’t know how else to put it. As a teacher, I help students learn English and as a teacher trainer and publisher I help teachers help their students. It’s high time I moved a step further. I strongly believe that a transformation does not happen through one big event but because of several small actions. By making sure that all BRAZ-TESOL members have all the information they need to perform their tasks, I can really contribute to the development of ELT. And I’m determined to do my bit with all my might.
Statement of Purpose The decision leading to my running for Advisory Council Member of BRAZ-TESOL’s General Council has been based on a series of aspects, which I believe to be plausible enough to justify such choice. They include my previous experience as Treasurer of the ABC (Greater São Paulo Area) Chapter, my being active in the ELT field and other fields of Applied Linguistics for more than 12 years, as well as my willingness to cooperate and work closely together with the Association. If elected, not only will I be able to volunteer and donate time and work, but I will also be capable of sharing good ideas and efforts, aiming at keeping the achievements so far reached and looking at the challenges to come. In order to do so, I count on my previously-built experience, current expertise, good will, and your help.
Statement of Purpose As an active member of the BRAZ-TESOL Rio Chapter I am fully committed to expanding our membership in Rio and liaising with other ELT associations. Therefore, I believe that the energy and drive I have could be of good use to the Advisory Council, should I be elected a member. I have been fortunate enough to attend a few Board Meetings and have felt how engaged most members are. I would love to be part of this team and hopefully contribute with ideas to consolidate the position of BRAZ-TESOL in Brazil.
Statement of Purpose My commitment to ELT in Brazil began in 1989 when I began teaching English in Aracaju. Since then, I have been face-to-face with teachers in the public and private sectors in all 5 regions of Brazil, as well as being plugged in to the needs and wants of teachers all over the world through online forums and events. Since co-founding a Regional Chapter of BRAZ-TESOL in 1999, I have participated actively in ELT events all over Brazil and as a frequent speaker in dozens of conferences throughout Latin America. I believe in BRAZ-TESOL and intend to support its growth whilst increasing relevance to the classroom teacher. At National Conventions in São Paulo, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte, Brasília and Fortaleza, I have sought to contribute directly, but my greatest contribution is yet to come... and I am counting on your vote to join the Advisory Council!
Statement of Purpose As a teacher at a language school as well as in a high-school course, I am interested in using my experience as a bridge for ensuring the conversations among different profiles of EFL teachers. Also, as a former Academic Advisor and teacher trainer at Alumni, I understand that being on the BRAZ-TESOL staff will enable me to constantly give and receive meaningful professional input. The rich knowledge exchange fostered by the BRAZ-TESOL activities and the opportunity to contribute to this network motivate me to consider a position on the Advisory Council.
Statement of Purpose I was BRAZ-TESOL 2nd Vice-President in 1993-1994 and have collaborated with the organization ever since. A professional organization such as BRAZ-TESOL raises the teaching standards in our country by disseminating information to and promoting interaction among ELT professionals with diverse backgrounds in different teaching contexts. I trust that my experience in the public and the private sector, both in regular schools and language institutes, has equipped me to become an agent of this interaction, helping members bridge the gaps that different regional and social contexts may have imposed on their practice.
Statement of Purpose To help maintain the progress made in the past 2 years towards making BT a more professional organisation I believe Advisory Council members should be hands on helpers and not "back seat drivers".
Statement of Purpose I have been with BRAZ-TESOL as a member since 1990. I joined BT Proununciation SIG Central Committee at the very beginning, in 1994, invited by Camilla Dixo Lieff, its founder. I have been its coordinator for 5 years, very proud of our active SIG which has promoted bi-annual symposia in São Paulo since its foundation, as well as pre-convention institutes at National Conventions. For a couple of years now I have attended most of the monthly Board Meetings. As known by many people, BRAZ-TESOL finance situation needed urgent measures and, together with a team of hard-working people, I dedicated time to raise funds for the institution. Luckily I was quite successful getting good help from well-known companies. With the same objective in mind, I have created and coordinated BT ON FRIDAYS. Being a member of the Advisory Council will surely allow me to do more. I count on your vote.
