LEADING STARS OF TEACHING
"Dreams are like stars. You cannot touch them with your hands,
but by following them you reach your destination."
"The stars have always been used for night orientation to help us find or keep on the right course.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the Crux Constellation is a very distinctive one, and has always had
great significance in a great number of old native cultures and also of modern countries. Its name means
'cross' in Latin, because it is dominated by a cross-shaped pattern which is commonly known as the Southern
Cross. Since Americo Vespucci mapped it in 1501 on his first expedition, it has become a reference for
travelers in the South Seas, and through time, it has been a part of modern countries' cultures from flags,
logos, and coats of arms to anthems, poems, and rock songs. [...]
The Crux Constellation is still integrating peoples and cultures in Latin America. It continues showing
new and untrodden paths in English Language Teaching (ELT). And it has shown the course to many of you who
want to reach new destinations to get to where you are now."
The Southern Cone TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) is composed
of 5 organizations in South American countries: ARTESOL (Argentina), Chile TESOL,
PARATESOL (Paraguay), URUTESOL (Uruguay) and BRAZ-TESOL. Every two years, one of these
organizations is responsible for setting up an international convention.
BRAZ-TESOL is the organizer of the 9th Southern Cone TESOL Convention "Leading Stars of Teaching",
which will be held in Curitiba, Brazil, from July 18 to 20, 2011 at PUCPR, Campus Curitiba – Prado Velho.
A forum for professionals in the field of English Language Teaching, the convention promotes the discussion
of theoretical and practical issues related to the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages.
It is a unique opportunity for Southern Cone TESOL members and international colleagues to get together present
their work and reflect on their practice. Renowned specialists in ELT will be giving specialized courses as well,
besides leading workshops and delivering papers and plenary talks.
